Each cinema has its own identity and is designed with respect to the heritage of the local area. The first Curzon cinema in Mayfair was opened in 1934 and developed a reputation as a venue where you could see the latest in foreign language cinema. The most recent new venue, Curzon Sheffield, is housed in a former 19th Century bank with distinctive tin ceilings and a rooftop bar. Curzon Artificial Eye is the company's distribution label and was founded in 1975 to release critically acclaimed films to discerning audiences. Since its inception it has championed the work of towering auteurs as well as developing new talent, and has worked with world class directors from Michael Haneke (Amour), to Gasper Noe (Love 3D), as well as Lenny Abrahamson (Frank) and Clio Barnard (The Selfish Giant). Curzon Artificial Eye has been part of the historic Curzon group since 2006. Continuing in the pioneering spirit of both companies, Curzon launched the Curzon Home Cinema service in 2010, which is now available in over 6 million homes, offering audiences nationwide the opportunity to watch films when and how they want to. As of 2015, Curzon Cinem's became the first commercial cinema group in the UK to pay the Living Wage. In 2017 Curzon won a BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.
