We are one of 32 councils in Scotland, serving 22,400 people across 1,468 square km.\r\n\r\nThe Shetland Islands Council has 22 elected members, serving on 6 three-member wards and 1 four-member ward. Members will serve until 2017.\r\n\r\nSee how Shetland's 7 wards are divided.\r\n\r\nAll councillors are independent – none represent a political party.\r\n\r\nAs well as representing their ward, members serve on the following committees, which meet around every seven weeks at the Lerwick Town Hall:\r\n\r\n Education and Families\r\n Social Services\r\n Environment and Transport\r\n Development\r\n\r\nThe Council has also appointed other Committees and Boards to conduct legislative requirements or oversee the work of the Council in a range of areas. These are:\r\n\r\n Planning Committee (meets monthly)\r\n Licensing Committee\r\n Audit and Standards Committee\r\n Harbour Board\r\n Shetland College Board\r\n\r\nCommittee meetings are open to the public unless stated otherwise.\r\n\r\nTo learn more about our committees and their membership, follow the links below to our committee information system, COINS.
