About
Grumman/Butkus Associates (G/BA) is a professional consulting firm of design engineers and energy consultants with offices in Evanston, Illinois, Wauwatosa and Madison, Wisconsin. Current staff of all offices totals nearly 60. The firm provides mechanical and electrical services primarily to commercial, educational, governmental, healthcare, hotel, industrial and telecommunication clients. David L. Grumman, P.E., chairman, founded the firm in 1973 as a one-person energy consulting firm incorporated in Illinois. Alexander S. Butkus, P.E., vice-chairman of the Illinois office, started one year later, and Daniel L. Doyle, P.E., president of the Illinois office, joined the firm in 1980. Jean O'Brien Gibbons, P.E., vice president, started in 1989; T. Chad Luning, P.E., vice president; Gerry Noorts, vice president, joined the firm in 1991; James C. Shults, vice president, joined the firm in 2006. They, along with Nancy S. Boim, corporate secretary, and Gail D. Daigle, assistant corporate secretary, comprise the officers of the Illinois corporation. The board of directors consists of David L. Grumman, Alexander S. Butkus, Robert L. Bayne (president of G/BA Wisconsin), John G. Cooper (former president of Air Products Corporation), Daniel L. Doyle, Thomas Noyes (formerly Regional Marketing Director - Asia, Drake Beam Morin - HK and Adjunct Professor Northwestern University), and Bart Rocca (formerly a Principal with Towers Perrin). The Wisconsin office was started in 1981 under the direction of Jeffrey K. Conner, P.E., now chairman. In 1984 the office was incorporated in the State of Wisconsin. Its principals are Mr. Conner; Robert L. Bayne, P.E., president; Rick Katzung, P.E., vice president and Laurence E. Steiner, P.E., associate vice president; and its board is comprised of Messrs. Bayne, Butkus, Conner and Katzung. The Illinois corporation and principals of the Wisconsin office are the primary stockholders of Grumman/Butkus Associates in Wisconsin. In the early years, the bulk of the firm's commissions consisted of energy management studies. Clients included the University of Illinois, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Continental Bank and Oakton Community College. Significant projects included technical assistance for Mercy Hospital and Medical Center to obtain a $790,000 Cycle I Federal Institutional Conservation Program grant and energy consulting services for the College of Lake County that resulted in an over-30% reduction in campus energy consumption. As time passed, the firm grew and expanded its capabilities to include design retrofit for implementation of energy conservation measures recommended in its studies plus remodeling and renovation of mechanical/electrical systems in large buildings. Currently, the majority of the firm's work involves retrofit and renovation of existing facilities. About 20 to 30% of the firm's fees are attributable to studies, commissioning and other analytical services. The firm has been nationally recognized for its work, having received Energy Innovation Awards from the United States Department of Energy; Technology Awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE); and an M/E Engineering Achievement Award from Specifying Engineer magazine. The firm has also received 55 engineering awards from the ASHRAE from 1981 to 2006.
