Founded in 1957, the Old Town School of Folk Musicr is the only organization in Chicago dedicated to teaching and fostering appreciation for traditional music and cultures from around the world. The Old Town School is largest independent community music school in the country. Today over 6,000 students (including about 2,700 children) attend over 600 classes each week, and some 70,000 attend the School's concerts annually. The School faculty includes 250 professional musicians, dancers and artists. Outreach activities in partnership with local schools, social service agencies and others reach over 3,000 more youngsters who typically lack access to arts programs. Ongoing cultivation of diverse audiences has helped the School develop into a musical home for people from many communities.
