Sparta Township is a rural community of thirty-nine (39) square miles with a current population of 19,000 and 21,500 at build out. The State Designated Sparta Town Center is the cornerstone of the Township Land Use Plan. The existing development nodes at Woodruffs Gap, Blue Heron and Monroe are historic crossroads providing additional opportunities for specific planned smart growth opportunities to meet the goal of a fiscally balanced plan.
The Environs area outside of the center and nodes is characterized by steep and rolling hills, valleys and spectacular lakes interspersed with single-family homes. The Township is in three (3) major watershed management areas including the Upper Delaware, Wallkill and Passaic. There are nine (9) lake communities with Lake Mohawk being the largest.
The Master Plan and Ordinances promote the conservation of the rural character and the environmentally sensitive lands through innovative planning and zoning techniques such as residential open space clustering and land acquisition.
