About
In an unprecedented move, the John Jay College student government has donated $50,000 to the Imette St. Guillen Scholarship fund, voting to contribute money earned through class ring sales to honor the slain graduate student.“This heartfelt gesture expresses how deeply the John Jay College community has been moved by the loss of Imette,” said President Jeremy Travis. With the recent student government donation, the endowed scholarship fund now totals nearly $159,000.John Jay College established the scholarship after St. Guillen was killed in February 2006. But the fundraising efforts were significantly enhanced earlier this month when the Daily News, the Association for a Better New York and The City University of New York joined the College in a drive to raise $250,000.The fund will endow an annual scholarship for a second-year student in the criminal justice master’s degree program at John Jay. The scholarship recipient, who will be selected later this spring, will receive full tuition, a book allowance and a modest stipend. The recipient will be expected to intern with City of New York agencies or community organizations working on projects related to criminal justice, crime prevention or forensic studies.Individuals or organizations who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund should make checks payable to John Jay College Foundation: Imette St. Guillen Scholarship Fund and mail them to the John Jay College Foundation, 899 10th Avenue, Room 623T, New York, NY 10019
