DOWNS , KS , The Scoular Company, Downs , was awarded a certificate under the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The Downs facility is the Company's fourth grain handling facility to receive the prestigious award and the second Kansas grain elevator to achieve SHARP certification. According to KDOL officials, less than 1000 companies nationwide have received this honor. To qualify for SHARP, a business must have an exemplary safety and health record with a lost workday injury and illness rate below the national average for the company's Standard Industrial Classification. A written program incorporating four basic elements (management commitment and employee involvement, work site analysis, hazard prevention, and training) is also required. The company is nominated by KDOL's Consultation Project Manager and receives a one-year exemption from OSHA programmed inspections. Randy Linville, Scoular's President and CEO, said receiving the SHARP Award further strengthens the company's commitment to workplace safety and provides a goal for the company's other facilities.
