Harborstone Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. Individuals become members of a credit union, which means they are equal shareholders with one vote to elect a volunteer board of directors and supervisory committee. These volunteers oversee a professional management team and overall credit union operations. In a very real sense, Harborstone Credit Union's existence reflects its members' combined interests to continue operation for the benefit of the general membership in the local communities we serve. Unlike banks and for-profit financial institutions, earnings are returned to our members through competitive dividend and loan rates, and many free services. This direct financial value is given back to our members instead of being paid to a limited number of stockholders, officers, or out-of-state owners as many for-profit financial institutions do.
