About
For 40 years the South Suburban Humane Society has served the South Chicagoland area in the areas of Humane Education, Pet Adoptions and Animal Abuse Investigations. The South Suburban Humane Society was founded in 1971 in order to serve the animal welfare needs of the entire south suburban Chicago region. Since November 1973, the organization has operated a 10,000 square foot open-door animal shelter in Chicago Heights, Illinois. The South Suburban Humane Society has helped tens of thousands of animals. From its roots as a small group of volunteers to today’s organization comprising volunteers and paid employees, the organization was responsible for nearly 6,000 animals in 2009. In addition to animal sheltering and adoptions, our extensive outreach programs include humane education, abuse investigations, and community outreach events. We also operate two resale shops located in Steger, Illinois and Chicago Heights, Illinois that promote our organization, our animals and provide income to support our humane work.
