About
The animal protein sector is perhaps the largest chunk of emissions for which we have the fewest credible shots on goal to solve. The levers that we have to decarbonize animal protein (and especially the methane emissions therein) are: - Demand displacement (e.g. plant-based alternatives or behavior change) - Livestock efficiency improvements - Feed supply chain decarbonization (e.g. the displacement of synthetic fertilizer) - Antimethanogenic interventions (to eliminate enteric fermentation in ruminants) - Methane oxidation There are ~1.4B cows on the planet today, and reducing the topline demand for beef products, in particular, with plant-based alternatives is a fantastic and necessary effort. However, our current trajectory is 3B cows by 2050 – a climate disaster of extraordinary proportions. We need every shot on goal to decarbonize the cow, and the behavior change required to shift to a plant-based diet is necessary but likely insufficient in the face of the current generation’s preference for meat products. What if we could have real meat, without the cow, at a cost advantage to livestock? Enter Prolific Machines. We are building a novel cell manufacturing platform to enable industry-leading cost per cell produced. Our initial focus is on building an affordable, sustainable, nutritious, and delicious alternative to factory farming.
