Coral Gables Elementary, part of the Miami-Dade County Public School System, was established in 1923. The school is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is also designated as a City of Coral Gables Landmark. Coral Gables Elementary boasts a 600 plus seat auditorium, inner courtyard gardens, and a gazebo. A modern, state-of-the-art library/media center was added in 1995 offering the latest technology for both students and teachers. Located in the middle of a growing international city, Coral Gables Elementary School reflects the ethnic and international flavor of the City of Coral Gables. The school’s diverse student enrollment consists of 27% White Non-Hispanic, 6% Black Non-Hispanic, 63% Hispanic, and 5% other. Ten percent of the students are limited English proficient and 29% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Coral Gables Elementary is a controlled school of choice, which allows students to be assigned in grades K-5 based on space availability, proximity, racial diversity guidelines, parental choice, and random selection. The school provides a challenging, rigorous curriculum with flexibility to meet the individual needs of each student and an enriching program that promotes critical thinking, scientific exploration, artistic and musical creativity, physical fitness, and community service. The CORE Knowledge Sequence developed by nationally rewound educator Dr. E.D. Hirsch Jr., provides the basic curriculum framework for all classes at Coral Gables Elementary. The Florida Sunshine State Standards and the District’s Competency Based Curriculum also guide daily classroom instruction across disciplines. Coral Gables Elementary includes prekindergarten through fifth grade. A fee-supported prekindergarten program is available for students who have attained the age of four on or before September 1. This program is operated with a certified teacher and assistant. A full-time gifted program serving eligible students from Region IV of the District is available at the school. Gifted strategies are used to teach and grade all of the basic academic areas. This rigorous program serves over 280 students and continues to experience high levels of success. A resource, learning disabilities class for students in grades one through five, taught by two teachers, is also available to meet the needs of exceptional students. At Coral Gables Elementary School, we celebrate our rich multicultural diversity and emphasize cooperation with and concern for others. Our high expectations for academic achievement are balanced with curriculum activities and experiences which promote self-motivated, independent, lifelong learning. Children will apply what they have learned in the classroom to enrich their lives, make a difference, and teach others while they continue to learn, explore and communicate effectively through the use of public speaking.
