By selling staples, specialties, and Southern hospitality, Brookshire Grocery Company has grown into a chain of about 150 Brookshire's and Super 1 Food supermarkets in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The company also owns two distribution centers, a dairy, a fleet of nearly 350 trucks, and SouthWest Foods, its private label manufacturing unit. Brookshire's stores average about 40,000 sq. ft., while its warehouse-style Super 1 Foods stores average 80,000 sq. ft. More than 40 of Brookshire Grocery's stores sell gasoline. Originally part of the Brookshire Brothers grocery chain (dating back to 1921), the company split from it in 1939. The Brookshire family is still among the company's owners.
