About
Jericho Project was founded in 1983 to help a vastly increased number of homeless people living on the streets of New York City. Three churches on the Upper West Side joined efforts to provide food, clothing and, eventually, services. As Jericho's mission began to evolve, our Board realized that safe housing was needed. Jericho rented space in a single room occupancy (SRO) hotel and began to house those suffering from alcoholism. Later in the 1980s, when the crack epidemic caused an explosion in the number of men and women on the streets, Jericho's mission and approach were further refined. Today Jericho owns and operates five supportive housing residences in Harlem and the Bronx and is breaking ground this year on the first of two new supportive housing residences dedicated to homeless and low-income veterans. When they open their doors in 2010, Jericho's veterans' residences will provide homes and essential support services to more than 130 veterans. Our holistic approach to the multiple causes of homelessness has helped thousands reclaim their lives and rejoin their communities. Jericho supports each individual with a full range of services, including substance abuse counseling, a Vocational and Educational Program, a Family Reunification Program, and an Aftercare Program that supports graduates for two full years.
