As a nonprofit community revitalization organization, NHS’ mission is to revitalize underserved neighborhoods by creating and preserving affordable housing and providing opportunities for homeownership education, financial assistance, and community leadership. Working in partnership with government and business, we are led by local residents and guided by local needs. Incorporated in 1982, NHS opened seven offices and merged with NHS of Jamaica Queens. At that time, NHS’ focus was to help homeowners improve their homes and neighborhoods through rehabilitation lending. Later, to meet increased demand, we began providing services to help residents achieve first-time homeownership, culminating in the launch of the nation’s first Homeownership Center in 1995. Offering a full range of pre- and post-purchase services, the Center serves as the administrative headquarters of our citywide Homeownership Program.
