About
The Old Colony YMCA serves 31 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts with programs for all ages and abilities, designed to build healthy spirits, minds and bodies. Programs include fitness, after-school enrichment, summer camps, residential treatment for youth, senior wellness and more. All activities stress positive values that enrich the individual, strengthen the family and enhance the quality of life for all members of the community. The YMCA movement began in London in 1844, when George Williams and a group of fellow shopworkers created the organization to substitute Bible study and spiritual growth for the rough-and-tumble life on the city streets. The first YMCA in the United States was founded in Boston in 1851. The Old Colony YMCA was established in Brockton in 1887. Our first facility was constructed in 1901 and the organization has since grown both in size and impact. The Old Colony YMCA maintains full-facility divisions in Brockton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Middleboro and Taunton. Our Plymouth Division offers child care and a summer camp. We run four summer camps and more than 40 child care sites, making us the largest provider in the region. The Old Colony Y also runs a number of state-funded programs for at-risk youth. Each program, from child care to senior wellness, maintains a distinct focus on foundational values that help build character as well as physical health. Because we believe in the value of each individual, no one is turned away because of his/her inability to pay. Scholarships are available through the generosity of thousands of donors and supporters who believe in our work and know that our community is a stronger, healthier place because of the Old Colony Y and its diverse programs. Each year, the Old Colony YMCA serves more than 85,000 individuals. Approximately 70% of those we serve are under the age of 17. That's 60,000 children! We are the second largest YMCA in Massachusetts and one of the 30 largest Ys in the country. While our national office is in Chicago, each local YMCA, including the Old Colony Y, is autonomous and locally governed by a Board of Directors that reflects our community and its interests. In 2000, the Old Colony YMCA concluded a two-year capital campaign that raised nearly $5 million. These funds were used to renovate our Central Branch fitness center, expand and renovate the East Bridgewater Family YMCA, and build a new all-season lodge at Camp Yomechas. These investments will yield powerful returns in more lives that are enriched in spirit, mind and body -- resulting in a better quality of life for all of us.
