Virginia to be the healthiest state in the nation. History The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) formed in 1926 as a trade association of Virginia hospitals. In 1995, members voted to change the name from the Virginia Hospital Association to reflect changing membership, which includes not only rural and urban hospitals, but integrated health care delivery systems and their long-term care facilities and services, ambulatory care sites, home health services, insurance subsidiaries and other health system-related entities. VHHA's activities focus on four areas: representation and advocacy, education, communication and health care data. What We Do Representation and Advocacy Act as representative and advocate for policy issues affecting the delivery, quality, accessibility and cost effectiveness of health care. Recommend goals for state health policies and promote initiatives to help achieve those goals. Work with state and federal regulatory agencies and policy-setting agencies, to write new regulations, create policies and resolve problems. Education Educate members about changes in health care delivery and regulatory compliance. Help members evolve into effective integrated health service systems. Communication Communicate with members and help them communicate with each other. Communicate with media representatives and the public about important health care issues involving hospitals and health systems. Form partnerships and coalitions with community groups and business groups to achieve common goals. Data Act as a data resource for members, policy makers, state and national agencies and purchaser groups. Work to define and measure quality standards in health care. Organize activities with community leaders to improve health status.
