About
PAGE & TURNBULL, INC. was established in 1973 as Charles Hall Page & Associates. It is one of the first architecture firms in the West to focus on historic preservation and conservation services for buildings, resources and civic areas. We are headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Sacramento and Los Angeles. A firm of 30 people, each member of our professional staff, including seven licensed architects, ten architectural designers, and five architectural historians, meets or exceeds the Secretary of the Interior's Historic Preservation Professional Qualification Standards. We approach projects with expertise, passion and flexibility and are committed to the conservation of significant resources where these resources can be made to function for present and future needs. The firm supports continuing education and participation in community, professional and preservation organizations. We are members of the U.S. Green Building Council and have LEED accredited staff. We work both as prime architect and as preservation consultant on projects that require a specialty in historic preservation, materials conservation, and historic documentation. Architectural services emphasize the conservation of existing buildings and include rehabilitation, restoration, relocation, reconstruction and adaptive use. For more than thirty years we have been successful at analyzing buildings by defining their most significantarchitectural and historical spaces and elements. We welcome the challenge of solving problems of repair, strengthening and integrating new systems without compromising historical and architectural integrity. Many of the firm's projects involve compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and are subject to review by the California Office of Historic Preservation, the National Park Service and other agencies. Our preservation planning and documentation projects include Historic Structure Reports, National Register nominations, Section 106, NEPA/CEQA compliance, Historic American Building Surveys, Historic Building Preservation and Maintenance Plans and a variety of surveys, studies and planning reports. Historic buildings offer an opportunity to connect with our communal past and must be considered for contemporary uses. For this reason the design approach to historic buildings must be flexible. The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and their associated Guidelines are the first step. But we understand that such prescriptions are broad in scope and that they are not intended to prevent the continued life and usefulness of the buildings to which they are applied. The essence of Page & Turnbull's work is to establish an appropriate relationship between retention of the essential and the thoughtful integration of new technologies, accessibility standards, and modern building, life safety and security systems. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Institute of Architects, and others have honored Page & Turnbull with more than 50 awards. Our projects have appeared in numerous publications. Most importantly, a significant portion of our work is from repeat clients and their referrals. Page & Turnbull is committed to excellence in preservation, documentation, and design. We respect the lessons of the past and design enduring buildings for the future.
