Who says you can't teach an old log new tricks? Founded in 1932 by Warren Carter, Carter Lumber owns about 250 lumber and home-improvement stores in Ohio and eight other states from Michigan to South Carolina. The company caters to both contractors and do-it-yourselfers, supplying them with lumber, plywood, roofing, kitchen and bath products, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical products, heating equipment, tools, siding, and other products. The home-improvement retailer also operates a building supply center and 72,000 acres of timberland in Arkansas. Warren Carter died in 2000, at the age of 101, but Carter Lumber continues to be a family-owned business.
