PTCU is a nonprofit financial cooperative, established in 1932. Each member is an equal owner of the credit union, and each member has an equal vote to elect an unpaid board of directors. The Board of Directors represents the membership and are elected to three-year terms. The Board sets overall strategy for the credit union, while management implements policies and manages the ongoing credit union operations. The Board of Directors also appoints a Supervisory Committee who ensures that the Board and PTCU management abide by PTCU's written policy and that PTCU's financial records are accurate. PTCU is state-chartered to serve the employees of schools and nonprofit educational organizations located within Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill counties. Members may also include immediate family members, students, alumni, volunteers and retirees of organizations approved for membership. Portland Teachers Credit Union has over 154,000 members and over $1.5 billion in assets. Credit union deposits are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration.
