About
The Society for Neuroscience is a nonprofit membership organization of basic scientists and physicians who study the brain and nervous system. Recognizing the field's tremendous potential, the Society was formed in 1969. It has grown from 500 members to more than 37,500 and is the world's largest organization of scientists devoted to the study of the brain. The Society's primary goal is to promote the exchange of information among researchers. To this end, it publishes the scholarly journal The Journal of Neuroscience and holds an annual meeting each fall that attracts attendees from around the globe. SfN is devoted to education about the latest advances in brain research, and to raising awareness of the need to make neuroscience research a funding priority. For these reasons, the Society produces a variety of publications, and works closely with other scientific societies, disease advocacy organizations, and the National Institutes of Health. The Society relies on its 117 local chapters for grassroots representation of the neuroscience community. Across the globe, these chapters hold scientific lectures and other activities for the educational advancement of local neuroscience communities.
