About
The National Institute for the Psychotherapies offers a four year postgraduate training program in Adult Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy. NIP TI offers candidates a four year program of courses, clinical seminars and supervised treatment experience. Our goal is to enable the candidate to complete the program with a solid grounding in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, prepared to encounter, evaluate and assimilate new developments in the broader field of psychotherapy. Upon completion of the program, the Institute confers a certificate in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy. The core of the program encompasses a thorough training, both didactic and clinical in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy. NIP TI offers intensive comparative study of psychoanalytic theory and technique with an emphasis on recent advances in relational theory including object relations theory, self-psychology and interpersonal psychoanalysis. Third and fourth year candidates may elect to study additional theoretical topics, including those that are not strictly psychoanalytic, which supplement traditional psychoanalytic skills. A final project, due at the end of the fourth year, is a paper, (approximately 25 pages in length), intended to demonstrate the candidate's ability to integrate theoretical and clinical material. Training is restricted to the certified disciplines including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and mental health nurses. In general, candidates must be eligible for certification in their discipline and should have a least one year of supervised postgraduate experience. NIP TI's distinguished faculty of supervisors embraces a diverse range of psychoanalytic approaches. After the first year, candidates are free to select supervisors based on their particular theoretical orientation. Candidates receive no fewer than two hours of supervision per week. Candidates are required to undergo psychoanalytic treatment at least twice a week throughout the training program and are encouraged to seek more intensive treatment (three or four times per week). Training analysts must be approved by the Institute and must minimally be graduates of a recognized postgraduate training institute. Candidates are expected to provide up to ten 45-minute treatment sessions per week in the NIP TI Treatment Center. This includes one three times a week treatment experience for a period of no less than one year. Candidates are remunerated for their services. Upon completion of the training, graduates may offer some patients the option of continuing with them in private practice. In addition, the Community Treatment Program allows NIP TI graduates to remain as affiliated therapists seeing patients in their own offices. Clinical revenues from the candidate's practicum experience will usually offset most training costs. As part of the application process, two individual interviews, one group interview and three letters of recommendation are required. A non-refundable $50 application fee is included as part of the process.
