Our Cause
The Y is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility. That’s because a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.
The Y is community centered. For nearly 160 years, we’ve been listening and responding to our communities.
The Y brings people together. We connect people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs.
The Y nurtures potential. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
The Y has local presence and global reach. We mobilize local communities to effect lasting, meaningful change.
Our Areas of Focus
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why we focus our work in three areas:
Youth Development – Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
Healthy Living – Improving the nation’s health and well-being
Social Responsibility – Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

Commitment to Diversity
The YMCA is a membership-based organization and welcomes women, men, girls and boys of all ages, races, ethnicities, religion, sexual orientations, abilities and financial circumstances. The Y takes its cue from the communities it serves to reflect its unique needs through offerings to members.
Our Ys and Camps engage hundreds of communities in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. By nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving health and well-being, and supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure.
The Y was founded in London in 1844 by George Williams and a small group of his friends to help young people find a positive foundation for their lives. The YMCA came to America in Boston in 1851, and quickly spread throughout the United States.
Our YMCAs are older than the state of Minnesota. We trace our history back to 1856. Over the years, our YMCAs responded to the changing needs of our communities. Today the YMCA serves men, women, boys and girls of all faiths, races, ages, abilities, and incomes. We are for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility.
