Located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Henderson State University was commissioned as Arkadelphia Methodist College in 1890 and was a sister institution of Hendrix College. In 1929, the college became a state institution, making it the second oldest university under state control. Henderson State University has the unique distinctions as the only Arkansas university which has been controlled by both Church and State and as the only public university named for an individual.
