About
Good Shepherd Episcopal School, founded in 1959 by Clara Hoffman to meet the need for weekday preschool classes, quickly became an outreach of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. By the mid 1970's, Good Shepherd Episcopal School had an enrollment of 400 students from prekindergarten through eighth grade. In 1989, the school received accreditation by the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools, and the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest. In 1992, Good Shepherd was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Departments of Education. The commendation summary reads in part: "A school willing to grow, take risks and demand excellence is a school that provides the best education. Good Shepherd's mission statement is a broad statement encompassing academics as well as character development. The school fulfills its mission with the careful meshing of programs and personalities. Good Shepherd is an outstanding educational environment highly sought by families in the surrounding communities." Good Shepherd Episcopal School is committed to community outreach through activities benefiting Salvation Army, Voice of Hope, and Mi Escuelita preschool, as well as other local charities. Seventh and eighth grade students tutor each week at area public schools. The Classroom of the Earth program, launched in 1992, provides students the opportunity to experience the out-of-doors, learning skills and discovering their physical capabilities, making decisions and stretching their talents, while experiencing the fun and joy of the outdoors. In July of 1995, Mr. J. Robert Kohler, who had the vision and the promise to take the school into the twenty-first century, became Headmaster of Good Shepherd Episcopal School. The last ten years have seen dramatic changes in the facilities. The Kelsoe Cottage was expanded, a new middle school and lower school were built and, through the generous support of the Kincaid family, the Kincaid Pavilion now provides a welcoming space for both lunches and student performances. In the spring of 2000, the 7th and 8th grade students were invited to compete in the Texas A & M at Commerce Spanish competition. There were 17 high schools and Good Shepherd, the only middle school in the competition. The Good Shepherd team took the sweepstakes, winning the whole competition. Subsequently, the school has taken the sweepstakes prize each time we have entered the competition.
