The auditor general shall conduct post audits of financial transactions and accounts of the state and of all branches, departments, offices, boards, commissions, agencies, authorities and institutions of the state established by this constitution. Mission The mission of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) is to improve the accountability for public funds and to improve the operations of State government for the benefit of the citizens of the State of Michigan. The OAG best accomplishes its mission by committing to total quality; by adhering to the professional standards of the auditing profession; and by promoting an atmosphere of mutual trust, honesty, and integrity among OAG staff and the people they serve. Description Initially created in 1836 as an elected office, the OAG became the independent oversight arm of the Legislature, and the Auditor General became an appointed official through a majority vote of the members of the Legislature, with the adoption of the Michigan Constitution in 1963.
