About
Since 1972, Explorer Pipeline has been serving the Midwest. Now operating 1,400 miles of pipelines, explorer pipelines run through Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Indiana and Illinois and directly into major cities like Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, St. Louis and Chicago. Through connections with other pipeline products, Explorer serves 70 major populations in 16 states. The Tulsa, Okla.-based company transfers petroleum products at a rate of four miles per hour equaling 15,000 gallons moved per minute. Pipeline movement of petroleum products has proven to be the safest and most reliable means of transportation. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, statistics support this method is the "most safe" for employees, the general public and the environment when compared to barge, rail and truck movement. Known for its high safety standards, Explorer has been recognized by The National Safety Council and the American Petroleum Institute. In 2002, Explorer won API's Occupational Safety Performance Award and was recognized for no lost workdays, meaning there were zero fatalities, zero days away from work, and zero job transfers or restriction cases during that year. "Our mission is to build a foundation on safety, integrity, and excellent service," said CEO Tim Felt. "We not only want to maintain a safe environment for our employees, but we want to protect the people in pipeline communities." To ensure the safety of their pipelines, Explorer has constant surveillance of its lines through field inspection, aircraft patrol, and 24-hour monitoring from the control center in Tulsa. They also participate in One Call, a notification system for the public in each of the six states where Explorer operates. Explorer goes to many extents to educate the public on pipeline safety. "We have regular briefings in all the cities along the pipelines with emergency responders, elected officials, and others who need to be educated about our system," said Felt. In addition to speaking to municipal officials, Explorer speaks with civic, business and school groups. The company maintains current information online and in print, and holds regular media briefings to keep people in pipeline areas aware of Explorer's changes. Explorer has brought the industry convenience, cost-effectiveness and safety, says Felt. They can deliver 677,000 barrels of No. 2 Fuel Oil in a single day, a feat that would otherwise take 3,160 highway transport trucks or 1,100 jumbo railway tank cars. A gallon of gasoline can be sent from the Gulf Coast to Chicago for two cents with no weather disruptions, no noise, no inconvenience, and with the highest degree of safety for those along the way.
