About
Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) is a public/privatepartnership founded and funded in 1996 by the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and The Pew Charitable Trusts. In 1996, GPTMC launched the first centralized effort to promote to potential tourists the diverse historical, cultural and entertainment/leisure aspects of the five-county region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia). This centralized effort continues with a fully integrated marketing program, including consumer research; advertising in television, print, outdoor and the Internet; and public relations in all media categories. GPTMC receives annual support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and in July 1999, the corporation began receiving a significant, dedicated funding stream from a one percentage-point increase in the hotel sales tax championed by the hotel community. In 2001, GPTMC received a three-year cultural grant from the William Penn Foundation and funding from the Delaware River Port Authority for in-region marketing and advertising projects through 2004. After the events of September 11, Mayor John F. Street selected GPTMC to lead the Mayor's Hospitality Industry Support Initiative, including the Philly's More Fun When You Sleepover campaign and Philly Overnight Hotel Package .
