St. John Neumann Catholic Parish was formally declared a parish community by the late Bishop William Johnson on December 1, 1978. Father Colm Conlon was appointed the first pastor. The parish was placed under the patronage of St. John Neumann, the first male canonized saint from the United States, who was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1976. It was most fitting that our parish is named after Bishop John Neumann, since the first parish in Irvine, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, was named for America’s first native saint.
The first masses were celebrated in the gymnasium of Irvine High School and in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Ground breaking for the new church took place on June 15, 1980. The first mass was celebrated in the new church on November 8, 1981. Cardinal John Krol of Philadelphia consecrated the Church on June 6, 1982. (St. John Neumann was the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia.) Ground for the new offices was broken on June 6, 1992. The new parish center was completed in March of 1996. A new parish, St. Thomas More, was established from St. John Neumann in the northern part of Irvine on July 1, 1996.
A new youth ministry building was completed in 1999. This serves the youth and young adults of our parish in spiritual, service, and social activities.
A new parish rectory (2001) completes our building program. The parish office building, attached to the church, is open for parish business and parochial activities.
A grateful community offers thanks to God for the gifts of faith and love that enabled us to build up the Church of God in Irvine. We pray for all those who generously provided their treasure, talent and time to make this community a reality. May we continue to grow!
