The New Jersey Herald was founded in 1820 by Col Grant Fitch, a Newton Merchant, and remains the only daily newspaper in Sussex County. However, the first newspaper in Sussex County was the Sussex Register, which made its appearance on Monday, July 6, 1813. The Register was four pages and was published with a staff of two: the founder, John H. Hall, and one assistant. Hall also delivered the paper.
