This year, the Greenville County Library System will celebrate its 90th anniversary. Our public library has seen some great changes over the years. The first "Main" library was opened in a small storefront on Coffee Street in May of 1921. This small, one room building was bought for $200 and was one of the three branch locations at the time. Today the library system spans the county - from Travelers Rest to Fountain Inn and nine other locations in-between, plus a bookmobile to reach rural areas. Stop by the South Carolina Room for more images of our 90 years of service to Greenville County! The Carolina First South Carolina Room has an extensive collection of materials to assist researchers interested in historical and genealogical research. While the major focus of the collection is Greenville and the Upstate, there are many sources for other locations in South Carolina and other states. Check out these great photos of our library system throughout history - these and many other historical photos are available in the South Carolina Room's archives! Established in 1921 with only 500 books, the Greenville County Library System has grown into eleven locations and a website offering information, entertainment, and enrichment with nearly 1 million available items. Visit any branch and you will find a welcoming place offering free Internet access, books, DVDs, music, online resources, research assistance, genealogy help, programs for all ages, and much more. A bookmobile serves the rural parts of the county and homebound service is available to those who cannot visit a local library.
