Emanuel Medical Center is a not-for-profit, community-based hospital owned and operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church and strongly adheres to a mission based on Christian values. That mission started in 1917 when two local doctors and two ministers saw the need to create a hospital for a growing community of friends. The original Emanuel Hospital accommodated just 34 patients. On the first floor were the kitchen, dishwashing room, x-ray room, main reception and patient rooms. Rooms and wards for surgical patients, two operating rooms and the obstetrical department were upstairs. A chicken coop behind the hospital supplied eggs and the traditional Sunday chicken dinner. Over the years, Emanuel has grown to a comprehensive medical campus. Emergency services, a critical care unit, pediatrics, medical and surgical services and a separate birthing center brings Emanuel’s total bed count to 150.
