Whole Earth Provision Company was conceived by a local couple in Dallas in the Spring of 1970. Their desire was to open a store providing books and equipment for travel, wilderness camping, backpacking, self help and self-education based on concepts put forth by the Whole Earth Catalogue. Moving back to Austin (having graduated from the University here) and locating a space near the current San Antonio Street store, they were joined by a brother and a friend, also students at the University of Texas. The company is still owned and operated in Austin by these four people working daily in the business. Expanding to five stores in Texas, Whole Earth has earned a reputation as a leader in the backpacking, travel and outdoor education industry. Outfitting generations of Texans since 1970, the company maintains the highest standards for product and service against industry giants now expanding into the state. The earlier product mix has grown to the point where we are sometimes hard pressed to define ourselves to the public. Recognized as the best backpacking and camping outfitters, our reputation extends to a remarkable mix of technical and casual clothing and footwear - and a terrific gift and nature store.
