About
The Johns Hopkins University Press (also referred to as JHU Press or JHUP) is the publishing division of Johns Hopkins University. It was founded in 1878 and holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously running university press in the United States. The Press publishes books, journals, and electronic databases. Considering all its units (books, journals, fulfillment, and electronic resources) it is a contender for America's largest university press. Its headquarters are in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel Coit Gilman, the first president of the Johns Hopkins University, considered publishing not simply the necessary business of a great research university, but one of its â??noblest dutiesâ??. In 1878, just two years after the founding of the University, Gilman turned to leading members of the Hopkins faculty to launch the pioneering enterprise that would become the Johns Hopkins University Press. Still inspired by the ideals set forth by President Gilman in 1878, the Johns Hopkins University Press continues to identify and publish works that advance new knowledge, delivering them â??far and wideâ?? in innovative and effective ways.
