Sport Australia is the brand name of the Australian Sport Commission, a Commonwealth entity within the Australian Government’s Department of Health portfolio, and incorporating high performance leader the AIS. It was established in 1985 and is governed by a board of commissioners appointed by the Australian Government with the board determining Sport Australia's overall direction, detailed allocation of resources and policy for delegated decisions. Sport Australia is accountable to the Minister of Sport and to Parliament.
Sport Australia is administered from Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Bruce campus. Other AIS operations are located in various capital cities around Australia, as well as the Gold Coast and Varese in Italy.
Sport Australia also manages Sporting Schools https://sportingschools.gov.au which is is Australia’s largest school-based participation program to help children foster a lifelong interest in sport.
