About
SCIJ's mission is to provide representation for all asylum seekers and to fight for a socially just immigration system by training students to become immigration advocates and by harnessing their idealism and energy for social transformation. In practice, this looks like training college students to provide free legal representation to asylum seekers and to organize for immigrant justice. SCIJ’s training program provides students with a broad overview of immigration law and history so they’re prepared to provide legal services to immigrants. The program includes lecture-style presentations and hands-on exercises, in addition to workshops about community organizing. Trained students provide pro bono remote and in-person immigration legal services to asylum seekers. This includes intake, case development, and representing them in their proceedings. Students also develop community organizing strategies with clients and local immigrant communities to campaign for local, state, and federal issues important to them. To make that all happen, SCIJ Partner with colleges and universities. School partners provide the space, student recruitment support, and staffing help for their program. SCIJ then runs the training program, operates the clinic, and provides the legal oversight. Students apply their skills through SCIJ’s clinic located at the partner schools.
