Formed in 1969, AMPI is a relatively young cooperative. The formation, however, was the result of a combination of more than 100 dairy organizations. Some of the cooperative's predecessors began operating as early as the late 1890s. In 1997, AMPI's two regions - the Texas-based Southern Region and Minnesota-based North Central Region - voted to separate. The Southern Region joined the Dairy Farmers of America cooperative based in Kansas City, Mo., and the North Central Region assumed the AMPI name, with headquarters in Minnesota.
