Mammalian cells are used to produce a myriad of products, ranging from vaccines and pharmaceuticals to tissue-transplants and disease models. However, the costliness of growing cells has become a bottleneck for companies looking to innovate healthcare and food industries. The status-quo for growing these cells is to use animal-based growth media. This is not only extremely expensive but is varied in quality and unethically sourced. Most cell culture media require young mammals to be slaughtered to extract this precious concoction. We plan to tackle these problems by engineering a new growth medium that is both inexpensive and animal-free.
