About
3Brain AG’s cell-electronic biointerfaces are able to connect to thousands of cells simultaneously and process biosignals (extracellular currents, spikes, field potential) at 20.000 frames per second in a spatially resolved pixel array. To do so, we use semiconductor microchips, not unlike the ones used in an ultra-high-speed HD camera (or CPU for that matter). This pixel array approach for recording & visualizing neuronal activity is effectively expanding the concept of label-free functional imaging beyond optical (microscopy) and optogenetic approaches. We are a world pioneer in creating high-resolution microchips that can interface with complex 3D model systems of the brain, like organoids or acute slices. Our products allow researchers to investigate 3D cellular networks at unprecedented depths and resolution, which opens up unrivaled access to the complexities of biological systems. Accura-3D chips have only half the diameter of human hair, and possess thousands of electrodes on biopolymer-covered microneedles that can bypass damaged and surface cell layers of 3D model systems without disrupting the overall cytoarchitecture, thus retaining full biological integrity. Additionally, 3D model systems require efficient nutrient diffusion, oxygenation, and metabolic waste removal to avoid rapid necrosis of contact tissue that occurs when measuring on planar electrode surfaces. To address these issues, Accura-3D has custom-made microfluidic channels at the basis, designed to mitigate the physiological impact of varied diffusion gradients for oxygen, nutrients, waste or aid in delivery of drug candidates and other compounds.
