About
Community Academy of Philadelphia (CAP), a Pennsylvania Charter School, was one of the first Pennsylvania schools to receive a charter in 1997, the first to graduate a high school class, and one of the first five charter schools founded in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CAP is accredited Pre-K to grade 12 by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Committee on Institution-Wide Accreditation. Founded in 1980 by Mr. Joseph Proietta as The Community High School and sharing a common heritage with IECI/One Bright Ray Incorporated's Fairhill Community High School, we are proud to be in our 28th year of dedication to our city's future and our fourth full year in our state-of-the-art, 118,000 sq. ft. facility on a 6.5-acre campus, located at 1100 E. Erie Ave (between "J" and "K" streets). With an enrollment of 1200+ students in grades K-12, CAP provides students with the educational tools and experience that will allow them to achieve success long after graduation. The year 2005 marked our 25th anniversary. The silver anniversary high school class of 2005 included 64 new graduates. In April 2006, we held our 25th anniversary gala and awarded our first annual Councilman David Cohen Award for Innovation and Leadership in Public Education to State Representative Dwight Evans. Continuing into our second quarter century, the class of 2006 included 72 students and was the largest in our school's history. The 2007 class set another record with 107 graduates, making our total high school graduates in the Classes of 1981 to 2007 over the 1300 mark. Our graduation rate for 2007 was 99.98 percent. By the way, our smallest class was 1982 with just 8 students! Community Academy is divided into three divisions, the lower school (day care/pre-K to 4) [FYI, pre-K is limited to children in our in-house day care], the Alberta Dilonardo Proietta middle school (5-8), and upper school (9-12). In addition, support services are provided by our 15-member Emotional Support Team (EST), Lisa's Place Health Services, Teresa Gonzalez Mena Memorial Early Childhood Center Day Care, Special Education, including English Language Learner (ELL) support and our two in-house school psychologists. In addition, a remedial, compensatory education program, Intensive Learning (IL) spans all four years of high school. In the high school, AP Calculus was added in 2004-2005 and AP English in 2005-2006, in addition to Honors history and biology. Community Academy provides a full PIAA athletic program, as well as, clubs and extracurricular music, including high school choir, drum line, and lower school band. The Middle School chess team has been in the city finals the past two years, and the elementary school chess team is the city champion for the second year in a row (2006 and 2007). Providing a safe and secure environment for students to learn and grow is a primary goal. To this end, CAP employs its own security personnel who monitor all aspects of on-campus behavior and access to the building. Comprehensive CCTV coverage of the campus and access control technology further assists their efforts to always be on the look-out for the safety and well-being of our students. Take a moment to explore CAP and the educational, cultural, and social opportunities it offers our young people. Community Academy CEO and Founder Joseph Proietta receives the Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools (PCCS) Pioneer Award on the 10th Anniversary of the Charter School Law. Handing the award to Mr. Proietta is Rep. Dwight Evans, a longtime friend and principal sponsor of the Law. Also on stage (left to right) is Dr. Tim Daniels, Executive Director PCCS, and Larry Jones, President of PCCS and CEO of Richard Allen Prep.
