With a wealth of applications aimed at supporting clinicians and patients to better monitor, report and manage multiple health challenges and chronic conditions, there is currently little independent review to ensure their effectiveness, safety or value to user and professional. Which to choose and should I use? The level of benefit and risk remains on a trial and error basis. Subsequently confidence in apps, usage and in turn benefit is not being fully appreciated for the public, patients or professionals. With the elderly becoming increasingly technology savvy, and future generations being even more aligned to take advantage of this valuable and growing resource, the opportunity is there offer a significantly better and increasingly accessible level of support to the elderly both now and in the future, while assisting and reducing load on the NHS as well as improving patient care and quality of information. For it to be embraced however, requires careful review, assessment and promotion of the apps that work, as well as a feedback mechanism to record and optimise future outcomes and minimise risk. ORCHA sets to address this by using a proven framework to assess apps, and provide users and professionals with a live resource to find the best applications to address specific requirements. This will include a means of comparing and evaluating similar apps with an assessment of benefit and value, and more clarity on any risk associated with their use. ORCHA will help deliver optimum patient outcome and safety when employing apps, give users and professionals confidence to find and apply appropriate and valuable apps that will help improve quality of life, health management and optimise NHS resource.
