What Is Wood Research and Development?
Wood Research and Development is a Testing and Certification Lab, that also provides timber inspections, timber courses, and structural engineering and design. Our EPHOD™ non-destructive wood testing process using compression waves gives accurate data and helps prevent further damage to the structure, without the drilling of multiple holes that may accelerate further degradation. Our test lab and inspections are IAS certified, and we have a wide range of wood testing techniques for large and small-scale projects. Core samples are first obtained to provide a sample which can be studied for rot. The critical ratio of the woods’ density in water can also be tested at the same time. Our subsequent treatment process prevents rot and damage, and gives the wood a beautiful overall orange color. As part of the restoration and rebuilding process, we often specify glued-laminated timber beams (glulam) which are layers of treated wood glued together and laced with Kevlar rendering them super strong. This makes for both a stylish and lightweight option for your timber structures. After our timber inspection and lab tests are completed, our engineers then compile a report which highlights the the strong and weak parts of the timber structure, and what sections require repair. This information also shows how one bad support can ruin the overall strength of the structure in question. Each area of the structure is given a rating from 1 to 100% based on our 40 years of timber inspection expertise. Using this data, our engineers then create a design plan and timeline with possible options for cost-effective restoration and repair. Wood Research and Development has offices in the United States, Canada, and Australia, and we implement projects for our clients in any country. We work closely with our sister company Timber Restoration Services and Systems in the USA, Canada, and Australia to build and install all timber structural projects. Contact us for further details.
