What Is Washington University Student Media Inc. dba Student Life Newspaper?

One of the oldest college newspapers in the United States, Student Life was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1999. The newspaper is financially and editorially independent from Washington University. We’re funded through advertisers, subscriptions from parents and alumni, as well as a bulk subscription the university purchases for each undergraduate student. Student Life is published by Washington University Student Media, Inc. (WUSMI), a non-profit Missouri corporation governed by a 15-person board of directors. Board members include prominent Student Life alumni, as well as current WU students and faculty. The board serves an advisory role to the student-run newspaper and to the Editor in Chief. All content decisions are made by student staff without influence or control by Washington University or the WUSMI board.
