A rich broadcast history was born in December 1948 when WMC-TV became the first television station in the states of Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. The commitment that was made in 1948 to serve Mid-South continues today. As the news leader in Memphis and the Mid-South, Action News 5 is the #1 source for breaking news. Chopper 5, with "power zoom" technology, flies high covering breaking news live from the sky as the area's most experienced team of reporters cover the story live from the street. WMC-TV's excellence has been recognized by broadcast professionals in the form of awards from the National Association of Broadcasters, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
