What Is Virginia Tech -- Economics Department?

The Department of Economics at Virginia Tech focuses on teaching, research and outreach in regard to economic issues at the state, national and international levels. We offer both undergraduate and graduate training for students who wish to concentrate in economics. In addition, we offer general education courses that provide undergraduates from across the university with a background in the business, policy and international aspects of economics they need to support their programs of study. Dear Students, Alumni and Colleagues, It’s an exciting time to be an economist! The Department is expanding, over the next few years we will be hiring several people. We are hiring new faculty and developing new research opportunities in expanding evolving fields such as Neuroeconomics. We have already setup a new Facebook page – check it out if you have not already done so! Our students are doing well in their careers – many of our students have gone on to graduate programs in Economics, Law, Public Policy and Marketing to name a few. Others are now employed with government agencies (like the Department of Justice, Air Force, State Department, Marine Corps), financial institutions (Citigroup, Visa, Vangaurd, BB&T, Capital One) and a wide variety of private corporations (GE, E&Y, Deloitte Consulting, Xerox, Booz Allen). Our Ph.D.s are successfully finding academic jobs in colleges and universities around the world. Others are finding employment in industry at companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and many more! We would love to connect current Hokies with our alums. We want the VT Econ family to stay connected with each other follow and each others personal and professional successes. Help us launch and create the Economics Department LinkedIn community. Sudipta Sarangi Professor and Department Head Ph.D. (2000) Virginia Tech
