What Is Virginia Chance School?

A Progressive Preschool-Elementary in a historic stone schoolhouse on 26 magical acres. A challenging, progressive program that engages students in a hands-on, collaborative environment using outdoor integration, focused on building self-motivation, growth mindset, decision making, community building, and critical thinking. Chance provides two lead teachers in every classroom who guide children through a dynamic, progressive ed program with social-emotional and outdoor learning for all students. Students learn through hands-on discovery and collaborative group projects inside our bright classrooms and outside in our magical wooded setting. Accreditation: The school is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), a membership organization of 230 independent schools from 13 states in the Midwest. Program Foundation: The hallmark of a Chance education is the way in which educators thoughtfully and deliberately develop the whole child through the tenants of Progressive Education. The curricular foundation is a blend of the school’s philosophy with age-appropriate milestones and Common Core Standards along with guidelines from the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAECP), the Gesell Institute, and academic best practices. Campus & Buildings: The campus is a wooded wonderland for learning. Its 26-acres are surrounded by woods and fields, and the school sits on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River. The campus features a Learning Greenhouse, outdoor playgrounds, gardens, a soccer field and a running course. Constructed in 1914, the two-story main building has undergone extensive renovation that is sensitive to the history of the building as the former Rogers Clark Ballard School. The building features the Funroom (gymnasium), Treehouse and Lodge classrooms, art and music rooms, library and technology lab, and an abundance of picturesque classroom windows.
