What Is Vermont Academy?

Vermont Academy offers a diverse community of students. Founded in 1876, the school helped pioneer a college-preparatory boarding experience to both young women and men long before most colleges became co-educational. Our alumni carry on this pioneering spirit well after graduation, a tradition beginning with Florence Sabin, '87 (that's 1887!), the first woman admitted to Johns Hopkins Medical School. Throughout the years, Vermont Academy has reached around the world to welcome students. This year, we had students from England, Germany, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Mexico, and Sweden. We also encourage our students to see the world. Each spring, our faculty members sponsor trips to such countries as France (sightseeing and skiing in the French Alps), Spain (studying the language and culture), and Italy (museum hopping), as well as stateside trips to California (snowboarding national competition), Florida (baseball and lacrosse training), Michigan (national wrestling tournament), New York (arts), and South Carolina (Myrtle Beach golf outing). Each summer, our foreign language department leads a trip to Ecuador to live with families, study the language and culture, and tour the Galapagos Islands.
