What Is VEXT?
We are in a new era, a new paradigm, of data-driven writing analytics. Detecting plagiarism doesn’t help people learn. And it doesn’t necessarily even prevent actual plagiarism. What does help people learn and grow as writers is mapping, measuring, interacting with, and improving on writing by viewing the data about writing. There are many reasons for the death knells of the traditional plagiarism detection paradigm: 1) traditional plagiarism detection services do not align with student, faculty, and school values of openness; 2) in its current technological state, it doesn’t work; 3) it doesn’t help improve student writing. Driven by thought leaders in Academic Integrity are looking for a new path forward. Why? Because across campuses there is a shift happening around openness that is radically altering the way faculty, researchers, and administrators are thinking about compensation and contracting for professional writing and publishing. There has been a groundswell along this vein that has been percolating at the undergraduate level for years. We are now entering a full-fledged paradigm shift happening around traditional views of plagiarism at the faculty and administration levels. VEXT is at the front of this wave. We are different because we start at a fundamentally different place: we don’t assume student guilt. We valorize and champion the knowledge work that is done when one writes or guides others in their writing. We recognize that decision makers need real, objective, macro views of what’s happening across their curricula to be able to make informed decisions. These starting points are what makes VEXT inherently different and substantively better.
