What Is VCCA?

You've probably read a book that was written at VCCA, or enjoyed a painting created here, or music composed in our studios. Now in its fifth decade, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts is a working artists' community that has awarded fellowships to thousands of our best national and international writers, composers and visual artists. Over 400 travel here each year for an intensity of time, space and freedom that enables them to produce award-winning works that go on to fill concert halls, galleries, libraries and theaters across the globe—including the ones in your neighborhood. Once they are accepted through a merit-based peer review process, the artists, writers and composers who come to VCCA are known as Fellows. Their residencies range from two weeks to two months, and include a private studio, private bedroom and three meals a day—all nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. VCCA Fellows have received every major artistic and literary recognition there is including the Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur "Genius Award" and National Book Award. VCCA-FRANCE VCCA is one of only three artists' communities in the world with facilities on two continents: Mt. San Angelo in Amherst, Virginia, and Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France. VCCA-INTERNATIONAL VCCA operates America's largest international artists' residency exchange program, with partner institutions in Germany, Austria, Malta and Ireland. VCCA. Because a creative space is a creative edge.
