What Is Utah System Of Higher Ed?

The USHE Board of Regents is the governing body for the Utah System of Higher Education. The Utah Legislature grants it the power to control, manage, and supervise USHE institutions including the University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, Southern Utah University, Snow College, Dixie State University, Utah Valley University, and Salt Lake Community College. \n\nThe Board’s major responsibilities include selecting and evaluating institutional presidents, setting policy, reviewing programs and degrees, approving institutional missions, and submitting a unified higher education budget request to the Governor and State Legislature.\n\nThe Board of Regents is comprised of 17 Utah citizens, all appointed by the Governor:\n\n• 8 at-large\n• 8 previous institutional trustees, with representation from each USHE institution\n• 1 student regent\n• 16 of the members are appointed for six-year terms and one is a student who serves a one-year term.\n\nThe Commissioner of Higher Education is the chief executive officer of USHE and is appointed by the Board of Regents. The Commissioner provides statewide leadership, makes policy recommendations to the Board of Regents, and executes Board of Regents policies and programs.\n\nThe Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA) and my529 (formerly the Utah Educational Savings Plan) are also under the oversight of the Board of Regents, and both organizations help to guide Utahns through the higher education financial planning process.
