What Is United Theological Seminary?
A Message from President Dr. Wendy J. Deichmann At the start of our 141st academic year, the United community is blessed and excited. We are blessed with an excellent faculty and staff, a growing number of friends who support this work, and scores of talented new and returning students. We are thrilled with the privilege of another year to recruit and educate faithful leaders for the mission of Jesus Christ in the world! At United, we believe there is no better time than the present to be in the ministry of theological education. The need for the Gospel of Jesus Christ has never been greater, and God is actively calling women, men and youth to come forward to serve in ministry and mission, to help make a difference in the world. Effective theological education provides the best preparation for most persons who are called to this ministry. Yet with many churches in decline, some are discouraged about both church ministry and seminary education. At United, we believe that the Holy Spirit is alive and well, and that there is no better time than the present to learn how to work with the Spirit, with the best teachers in the church and seminary, to help turn around the trends of discouragement and church decline wherever they are happening, so that spiritual growth and dynamic new life may emerge! Others in the church and society are distressed by deep divisions over social, political, and theological issues. At United we believe there is no better time than the present to study and bring to bear the deep spiritual, biblical, theological roots of the Christian faith, to rediscover and proclaim the Holy Gospel that builds up and unifies, rather than divides God's people! Many young people think the church is boring, irrelevant and judgmental. At United we believe there is no better time than the present to engage the constructive critiques, insights and questions of young people in responsible and respectful ways in our classrooms. Our goal is to help prepare all young persons who are called by God for dynamic, effective leadership in the church! It is sometimes said that theological education is too expensive and for many, inaccessible. At United, we believe there is no better time than the present to accelerate fundraising opportunities for scholarships, and to continue to develop and extend to the whole church not only traditional classroom education, but also state-of-the-art, electronic delivery of excellent theological and spiritual resources that can be affordably accessed by anyone, anywhere on the planet. In the face of great challenges in the church and world, the purposes of an even greater God are already unfolding, and at United we feel privileged to participate. Thank you for your prayers and support as we welcome new and returning students! And thank you for visiting our website. We hope you will visit us again soon, online or at our campus in Dayton, Ohio, USA!
